Do Your Photos Truly Represent Your Organization? (Part 2)

Content Management – ViGlob 360

In the first part of this article, we saw how the images on your website often create the very first impression a visitor forms, and why they deserve to be chosen with intention rather than at random.

We also explored how to stay authentic even on a small budget, and how to make the most of a simple smartphone to capture great photos.

Here is the continuation: points 4 to 6.

4. Stock photo libraries: useful, but use them wisely

Paying for image rights from a professional stock library can help in a pinch, especially to illustrate concepts. But be careful: these images are seen by thousands of other organizations, and many may be using them at the same time. For example, a “generic” photo of people reviewing blueprints, often used in the construction industry, may appear on several company websites in the same sector, making you less original or even identical to a competitor. Take the time to search carefully and find image concepts that stand out, rather than settling for the first generic results.

Another important point: visual consistency. Avoid picking images with completely different colour palettes. Instead, choose photos with similar tones to maintain a cohesive look across your website.

The same logic applies to your own photos: consider applying a similar filter or colour tone from one image to the next, so your website doesn’t look disjointed or improvised.

Stock images remain useful, but as a complement to your real photos, not a replacement.

5. Involve your team and volunteers

One of the best solutions is often the simplest: ask your team or volunteers to take a few photos during your activities. These images show your real people, your real atmosphere and your real impact.

Among your volunteers, there is often a hidden photography talent, or people with real strengths in social media or content creation who would love to put those skills to work for your organization. Sometimes all it takes is asking; many volunteers would likely be delighted to have this opportunity to contribute in a new way.

It’s authentic, cost-effective and strengthens a sense of belonging among those who take part.

6. AI-generated images: an option to understand clearly

AI tools may seem like a quick solution with no copyright to worry about, but the reality is more nuanced. Some tools are trained on millions of copyrighted images, often without the creators’ permission or compensation, an issue so serious that several lawsuits are currently before the courts. In short, even your favourite robot may have learned to draw by digging through someone else’s portfolio without asking.

Terms of use also vary widely from one platform to another. Some free plans outright prohibit commercial use of generated images, while paid plans generally allow it. And even once you’ve paid, read the fine print: some tools reserve the right to reuse, reproduce or even resell your own creations, as if you ordered a custom cake and the baker kept the right to put it in the window and sell it to someone else.

There is also a transparency issue: presenting an AI-generated image as if it showed your real activities or your real team can undermine your audience’s trust if it comes to light. If you use this type of image, make sure you fully understand the tool’s licence and avoid passing off a generated image as a real photo of your organization.

In Summary

The question to ask isn’t “Do I have a photo to post?” but rather “Does this image truly reflect who we are?” Your visuals are an extension of your mission and vision. Taking the time to think about them, even for just a few minutes, can make all the difference in how your organization is perceived.

Bonus tip: create an internal photo library that you build up over time with each activity. You’ll always have fresh, authentic images on hand, without scrambling at the last minute.
